Support Groups for 
Stroke Survivors

Support groups for survivors and caregivers are key to recovering from stroke. Support groups connect you with others who have similar stories. It’s where you will find new friends, support, hope, and encouragement as you embark on your post-stroke journey.

Note: Please be advised, there are system limitations within this tool. Not all Stroke Support Groups are listed in this tool.  Search is by zip code, so you must enter a zip code to find a group within a maximum 50 mile radius of said zip code.   Search by geographic city, area, etc is not possible in this tool per se... however a possible "work-around" given the system limitation is to use an online search engine (Google, DuckDuckGo, etc) searching for a Stroke Support Group by geographic city name (etc) and results may or may not come forth when using this tack.

The Aphasia Support Group of Rochester is open to those with aphasia and their families, friends, and caregivers. Facilitated by speech-language pathologists.

The format includes general group discussion as well as informational speakers on topics of interest.

Anyone with a communication impairment following stroke or other brain injury is welcome! Caregivers also welcome.

SPECIALTY GROUP. FOR PERSONS WITH RHD AND THEIR LOVED ONES ONLY.  The group is facilitated by two, licensed, experienced speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

This is a "lunch bunch" group, socializing among stroke survivors and caregivers as a group while having lunch at a restaurant. This group meets once a month.

SUNY Upstate Medical Center's Comprehensive Stroke Center program offers Central New York (CNY) Stroke Support Group

Triumph Over Stroke CNY is a survivor-led local nonprofit organization that was established in early 2016. Our Stroke & Aneurysm Support Group meets in the Physician's Lounge in located on the 1st floor of the building, behind the center atrium. Enter through Building "A" Entrance.

Corning NY/Guthrie Stroke Support Group meetings are held at Guthrie Corning Hospital.

Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA) offers a   “Virtually Neuro-Connected” Support Group Meeting – for Stroke Survivors and their Caregivers.

BIA-MA also offers numerous other support groups and in addition offers educational workshops and other presentations/programs..

Group is led by Mr. Jonathan (Jon) Nelson. This is a Christian oriented group that prays at beginning & end of each meeting.

Mid-Atlantic Aphasia Conference is an independent aphasia support group created by members from Hopewell Township, NJ, Hamilton, NJ, Levittown, Willow Grove, and Fairless Hills, PA aphasia support groups.

United Stroke Alliance's Stroke Support Group meets at Hult Center for Healthy Living.

Aphasia Recovery Connection's (ARC) - Aphasia Connect brings people together through 45-minute conversation groups designed especially for people with aphasia. Connect with others who understand your journey in a supportive, welcoming environment.

American Stroke Foundation's (ASF) – Next Step Program is aimed at maintaining and improving health, wellness, and participation for individuals who have moved beyond their stroke and wish to take their next steps in life. Health professionals develop targeted activities within four primary areas: Communication, Health Behaviors, Life After Stroke, and Physical Fitness.

Stroke Awareness Oregon (SAO) hosts a "Stroke Warriors" Stroke Support Group meeting. Meeting structure may vary, such that meetings may be a topical presentation, or meetings may be "open topics" and discussions led by trained facilitators as well as healthy, positive, stroke survivors.

SAO also offers a number of other Stroke Support Groups.

SPECIALTY GROUP.  MEN ONLY.   Stroke Awareness Oregon (SAO) hosts a Men's Monthly Stroke Support Group meeting.  Meeting structure may vary.  Most meetings are an "open discussion" format, and upon rare occasions there may be a topical presentation that has been requested.  Facilitated by stroke survivor, John DeBell. ​

SAO also offers a number of other Stroke Support Groups.

Saddleback Medical Center/Memorial Care hosts  Stroke Warriors Stroke Support Group for survivors and their caregivers.

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) Comprehensive Stroke Center offers a Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) Stroke Support Group for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

Champion the Challenges (CTC) offers a Stroke Support Group meeting. facilitator: Coach Greg Mengis.

In addition a Champion The Challenges' webpage lists numerous other germane Support Groups (both "in-person" & "virtual" format types), hosted by non-CTC entities, all arranged in a monthly/weekly calendar design for anyone to reference.

Pacific Stroke Association (PSA)'s "Life After Stroke" Support Group is facilitated by Deborah Flaherty, MA and Lori Tam Lee, OTR/L.

PSA also offers a number of other Stroke Support Groups, two among them are a Men's Only Support Group, and also a Women's Only Support Group. See pacificstrokeassociation.org/stroke-support-groups for more info.

Stroke Support Association (SSA) meets most weeks Jan-March, May-July, Sept-Nov.  Groups are led by various trained facilitators.   -  No meetings held during April, August, December.

StrokeOT, Inc. is a team of healthcare professionals and volunteers who provide free and low-cost virtual and in-person rehabilitation classes focused on health, exercise, and lifestyle education.
