American Stroke Association Support Group Locator

Support groups for survivors and caregivers are key to recovering from stroke. Support groups connect you with others who have similar stories. It’s where you will find new friends, support, hope, and encouragement as you embark on your post-stroke journey.

UR Medicine Thompson Health Stroke Support Group

UR Medicine Thompson Health hosts a monthly Stroke Support Group for survivors, loved ones, and caregivers. Led by stroke-certified RN Sarah Gallagher, meetings are held via Zoom on the first Thursday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. To join, email StrokeSupportGroup@URMC.Rochester.edu.

Network for Spousal Caregivers of Stroke Survivors, NY Finger Lakes Region

This support network is a peer founded and organized group of spousal caregivers looking for support from and striving to create a sense of community with others navigating similar situations.  As spousal caregivers, we have had our relationships, family circumstances, and day-to-day lives completely upended, as the result of our spouse/life partner suffering and surviving a life-altering stroke (or similar medical event).

AARP Caregiving for a Loved One Hotline

Sometimes, it’s easier to just ask. That’s why AARP has a dedicated, toll-free family caregiving line for people taking care of a loved one. Our agents can’t provide specific advice to callers, but they can suggest resources on a variety of topics.

Agents are available to take calls Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET at 1-877-333-5885. The support line is also available in Spanish, at 1-888-971-2013.

Brain Injury Association of New York State Caregiver Support Group

The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) is a statewide non-profit membership organization that provides advocacy and support to people and families living with brain injuries. BIANYS offers an afternoon and evening support group option. Meetings are once a month.
